EKU caps road stretch at West Virginia on Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eastern Kentucky University’s men’s basketball team will see its stretch of six straight road games come to an end in a televised game at West Virginia on Sunday.

The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., and will air live on Lexington’s WTVQ-36 and ROOT Sports, a regional network in Pittsburgh that is also available nationally on Direct TV. The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com.

There are a number of connections between the two programs. EKU head coach Jeff Neubauer was an assistant coach at West Virginia under John Beilein from 2002 to 2005. Junior walk-on Ryan Parsons is from Morgantown. Eastern assistant coach Rodney Crawford played two seasons for Bob Huggins at Cincinnati (2000-02). Crawford spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at Duquesne under current WVU assistant coach Ron Everhart.

Eastern Kentucky (10-2) is ranked 22nd in this week’s CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25. That’s down three spots since last week (19).

At No. 10 Illinois on December 16, senior Mike DiNunno made just 1-of-13 attempts from the field, went 0-for-5 from three-point range and scored two points. In the two games since, he’s made 44 percent from the field, 53 percent from three-point range and has averaged 22 points. He was named Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week on Sunday.

West Virginia is in its first season as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The Mountaineers have won two games in a row and are 6-5 overall this year.

Aaric Murray, a 6-foot-10 junior center, leads WVU in scoring (11 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). Juwan Staten, a 6-foot-1 sophomore guard, is the team’s second leading scorer (10.5 ppg).

The Mountaineers are averaging 70 points and allowing 67 per game. West Virginia has shot 41 percent from the field and just 28 percent from three-point range. Its opponents have made 43 percent from the field and 34 percent from deep. In their last game, the Mountaineers beat Radford 72-62 on December 22, a team the Colonels downed 83-75 in November. Murray had 23 points and eight rebounds. Radford made just 3-of-18 shots from three-point range (17 percent).

This will be the second meeting between the two programs. In the first meeting, EKU defeated the Mountaineers, 93-91, on Feb. 15, 1979 in Charleston, W.Va.
