BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – For the second straight week, Eastern Kentucky University redshirt sophomore Corey Walden was named as the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week on Monday, the league announced from its Brentwood, Tenn., headquarters.
The award is the third this season for Walden.
Walden, a 6-foot-2 guard, scored 22 points with five rebounds, three assists and a steal in EKU’s win over second place Tennessee State on Thursday. He hit 7-of-11 from the field and all seven free throw attempts.
Two days later the Daytona Beach native led Eastern with a game-best 24 points against OVC leader Belmont. He made 6-of-10 shots from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line.
In two games, Walden averaged 23 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals. He made 62 percent of his shots from the field and 17-of-19 attempts from the charity stripe.
Walden played his freshman season at Stetson before transferring first to Brevard Community College and then to Eastern Kentucky. He missed the 2011-12 season due to an injury.
The Colonels take to the road this week to face two OVC West Division teams beginning on Thursday at Tennessee-Martin. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET.
