RICHMOND, Ky. – The Eastern Kentucky University football team will hold four practices this week including a scrimmage this Saturday in Hazard. Below are some more news and notes from the first week of spring football.
--EKU’s first two practices were held in helmets only before the team suited up in pads last Thursday.
--There are three quarterbacks participating in spring ball: senior T.J. Pryor, junior Ben De La Cruz and sophomore Jared McClain. Pryor needs 622 yards passing this fall to become the program’s all-time leader in that category. Pryor threw for 1,605 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior. De La Cruz had to sit out the 2011 season due to NCAA transfer rules. In two years at Bethune-Cookman, De La Cruz was utilized as both a quarterback and safety. McClain started the 2011 season opener at Kansas State due to a Pryor injury and nearly led the Colonels to an improbable win.
--The Colonels enter spring practice in fairly healthy condition. Only senior running back Jeremiah Williams and junior offensive lineman Justin Meredith are key returnees who will see limited or no action due to injuries.
--There are lots of mid-year additions in the trenches for EKU. Travon Carter (Trinity Valley CC (Texas)), Jason Creeden (Fork Union Military Academy (Va.)), Trey Shelton (Hargrave Military Academy (Va.)) and Moe Vogel (Nassau CC (N.Y.)) add depth to the offensive line while Julio Geronimo (Nassau CC (N.Y.)) and Courtney Prince (Virginia Tech) join the ranks on the defensive side.
--Practice times for this week are Monday (3:30 p.m.), Tuesday (2:45 p.m.) and Thursday (2:45 p.m.) at Roy Kidd Stadium. The football squad will hold a scrimmage in Hazard, Ky., this Saturday at 2 p.m.
