MOREHEAD, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University’s softball team continued its strong start to the conference schedule by sweeping a doubleheader at rival Morehead State on Wednesday. EKU improved to 4-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference after winning by scores of 2-1 and 8-6.
Game one was a pitching duel between EKU freshman Leanna Pittsenbarger and Morehead State’s Katie Pfost. The Eagles scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the second on Amber Riddle’s inside the park home run.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the home team until the final inning. With the tying run on third base and the Colonels down to their final out, Carissa Reisinger singled to right field to tie the game. After Reisinger stole second base, Raquel Howes hit a double to right to drive in what would prove to be the winning run.
Pittsenbarger (6-6) allowed one hit in the bottom of the seventh, but the tying run never got farther than first base. The freshman allowed one run on five hits over seven innings. She walked only one and struck out four.
Pfost (2-5) did not allow an earned run while surrendering eight hits over seven innings. She walked one and struck out eight.
Reisinger went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Howes finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.
In game two, the Colonels (10-13) scored one run in each of the first three innings before taking a commanding lead with four runs in the fourth. Howes got EKU on the board with an RBI double in the first. With a 3-0 lead in the fourth, Howes drove in another with a single up the middle. One batter later, freshman Katie Tackett hit a three-run home run over the left-center field fence for a 7-0 lead.
Morehead State (7-15, 1-6 OVC) attempted to comeback by scoring five runs in the final three innings. After making it an 8-3 game with a pair of runs in the fifth, the Eagles scored three more in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Katie Raile singled to center to plate two runs. After a ground out, Anna Sommer singled down the left field line to make it a two-run game with runners at the corners. However, Pittsenbarger got a pop up to end the game.
Tackett finished 2-for-3 with a run, a walk and three RBIs. Diane Gallagher had four hits in five at bats and a stolen base. Shaylon Robb (4-6) started and allowed three runs in four innings. She walked three.
Sommer went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Morehead State.
In what has become “Rivalry Week” for the Colonels, EKU will play host to Western Kentucky on Thursday. The single game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
