MOREHEAD, Ky. - Connor Thiel and Jarrod Combs have signed National Letters of Intent with the Morehead State men's golf program. Both are expected to be on campus next month and have four years of eligibility as true freshmen.
"The most impressive thing to me is our newcomers are very good students and high-character young men," said Head Coach Dr. Rex Chaney, who begins his 38th year with the men's golf program at Morehead State. "We're certainly looking forward to working with all of them."
Thiel, a graduate of Arrowhead High School (Hartland, Wis.), earned Classic 8 Conference accolades his final three years. He was a first-team selection as a senior, second-team choice as a junior and honorable mention as a sophomore.
As a senior, Thiel earned league tournament medalist honors. As a junior, he helped the Warhawks to a Wisconsin High School Athletic Association Division I state championship, conference title, district crown, sectional championship and five invitational titles.
"Connor originally caught my attention because his driver is straight and long," Chaney said. "He's also a very good putter. Connor's playing time will increase as his short game develops. We are looking forward to seeing what all of our newcomers can do during the fall season."
Combs, a graduate of Hazard High School (Ky.), spent six school years with the varsity golf team. He helped the Bulldogs to All-A Region appearances on six occasions and played in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Tournament four times.
A captain for the golf program his junior and season seasons, Combs also played tight end in football and guard in basketball at Hazard. His mother, Sondra, played basketball for Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Kentucky from 1984-88.
"Jarrod played multiple sports in high school, which speaks to his athleticism," Chaney said. "He also comes from good bloodlines, with his mother's basketball experience. Jarrod is a good driver and excellent putter. He's young in terms of golf years, but has a lot of potential."
Morehead State opens its season Sept. 9-10 when it hosts the Wasioto Winds Fall Kick-Off Invitational in Pineville, Ky. Check MSUEagles.com for updates throughout the 2013-14 campaign.
