ROME, Ga. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced Tuesday that 259 football student-athletes have been named 2012 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Representing Union is senior Zach Eagler.
A business administration major, Eagler made 73 tackles with two sacks and 4.5 tackles for lost yardage this season. The Florence, Ky., native also had two fumble recoveries. He recorded a season-high nine tackles three times. For his career, Eagler tallied 221 total tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and two sacks. In addition, he forced and recovered three fumbles, intercepted one pass and broke up three others. In 2010, Eagler returned a fumble 71 yards for a touchdown.
In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete mush maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
The America Football Coaches Association-NAIA All-America team and the Rawlings-NAIA Football Player of the Year will be announced Wednesday.
Union posted a 4-7 overall record and a 1-4 Mid-South Conference East mark.
