Former Shelby Valley standout and Louisville guard Elisha Justice will head to the Big Easy to take part in the Final Four game against Kentucky ... But we wanted to know how divided the fans are in pike county about who they will cheer for this weekend….
It's not everyday a kid from the mountains gets to play on college basketball's biggest stage. Shelby Valley star and 2010 Mr. Basketball Elisha Justice took his talents to Louisville after High School and he is now a part of the first Cardinals team since 2005 to play in the final four.
“It would’ve been easy for him to go to UK,” Shelby Valley Athletic Director Connie Compton says. “Because so many people wanted him to go there. But he decided to follow his own heart and that’s where his heart was at UofL.”
Perhaps none are prouder than his grandparents, Otto and Bea Newsome.
“We watched him all throw his elementary school, high school and now at Louisville,” Bea Newsome says.
Who are now Cards fans. They will watch the final four at home cheering on their grandson
“I think it’s a great privilege for him being on the team and I hope he can help a little bit,” Otto Newsome says.”
Elisha grew up here in what some people consider the heart of cat country right here in Pike County but let’s not forget, he was a wildcat first here at Shelby Valley. Now he's a Louisville Cardinal playing in the final four this weekend against their biggest rival and while most want the cats to win, there is no doubt will be cheering for this weekend.
“Haha. The Cardinals.”
“It’s no secret who you’re going to be rooting for on Saturday is there? Haha Nope!
“I am rooting for Elisha Justice.”
“I like both but I root for Elisha when he gets in,” Logan Lucas says.
Regardless of Saturday's outcome, The Shelby Valley Community and his family are very proud of their hometown son.
