Family Tradition: Kasi Watson signs with Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – She’s been a member of the Bear family her entire life. Today, she insured that it will continue for at least the next four years. Kasi Watson, a senior at Johnson Central High School, has signed to play college basketball at the University of Pikeville.

Kasi is the daughter of Bill and Betty Watson of Paintsville. She will play for her father, who has won more basketball games than any coach of basketball in Pikeville College/UPIKE history.

This season, Kasi is averaging 11 points per game, handing out five assists and grabbing four rebounds. In addition, she has helped the Lady Eagles to a 2-1 record with 39 percent shooting from the arc and is averaging two steals per game.

As a junior, she averaged 9.0 points and 2.4 rebounds while handing out 1.6 assists per game.

Kasi is an incredibly strong student as well. Her 4.0 grade-point average has her tied for first in her class. She was a People to People Student Ambassador to England and France and has been an Academic All-State selection for three years. In 2009, she was a member of the 57th District and 15th Region championship team.

In 2011, she was the recipient of the Team Leader Award and the Free Throw Award and was a WYMT-TV Student-Athlete of the Week. She was a member of the Johnson Central softball team that won the 57th District and reached the championship game of the 15th Region tournament. As a softball player, she has been Academic All-State two times.

She is a two-time member of the East Kentucky All-Star team, was the winner of the 110 Percent Award at the High Potential Basketball Camp in 2011 and the Top Passer at that camp in 2009.

Like her mother, who teaches mathematics at Johnson Central, Kasi will major in Secondary Education/Math.
