MOREHEAD, Ky (WYMT) - Devon Atkinson, a point guard at Morehead State from 2011-13, has signed a professional contract with the Rendsburg Twisters Basketball Club in Germany.
"Congrats to Devon on this terrific accomplishment," Head Coach Sean Woods said. "This is a case of a guy who worked really hard and made huge strides during his senior year."
Atkinson averaged just 1.5 points and 0.8 assists in 8.7 minutes per game as a junior, but increased his averages to 7.6 points and 5.1 assists in 28.5 minutes per contest as a senior. He played in 26 games with just three starts in 2011-12, but started all 33 tilts in 2012-13.
"There were a lot of people doubting Devon when I took this job (summer of 2012)," Woods said. "Two years ago, Devon barely got off the bench. Now, he's a professional basketball player. This is certainly an inspirational story. We wish Devon the best moving forward."
Atkinson ranked third in the Ohio Valley Conference in assists per game last year and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). He knocked down 42 percent from the field, 43 percent from three-point range and 80 percent from the free-throw line while posting two double-doubles.
"Every young man in our program should have dreams and aspirations of playing professionally," Woods added. "That might not be realistic for 100 percent of our players, but that's the type of mindset we want. We want high-character guys who work extremely hard."
Atkinson transferred to MSU from Brunswick Community College (N.C.). He averaged 9.1 points and 6.7 assists as a sophomore in 2010-11. A graduate of Farmville Central High School (N.C.), Atkinson averaged 19.0 points and 9.0 assists as a senior en route to all-state honors.
