Former MSU football star McDermott joins coaching staff

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Wes McDermott, a linebacker at Morehead State from 2006-09, has returned to the football program as an assistant coach. He will work with Eagle defensive backs.

“Wes will be a terrific addition to our coaching staff,” Head Coach Rob Tenyer said. “Wes had an outstanding career on and off the field at MSU, and played for several teams after college.”

McDermott was a three-time All-Pioneer Football League selection and an academic award recipient several times in his career. In 2009, he was tabbed as the PFL’s Defensive Player of the Year and an Associated Press Third-Team Football Championship Subdivision All-American.

McDermott finished his Morehead State career with 316 tackles, including 48 tackles for loss. Upon graduation, McDermott ranked 19th in FCS history in TFLs and 24th in TFLs per game.

“I’m excited about having two former Morehead State players on our coaching staff,” Tenyer said. “Wes is another individual who understands our program, university, community and what it takes to be successful here. He will be a great asset to us in so many ways moving forward.”

After graduation, McDermott spent time with three teams in the Indoor Football League -- the La Crosse (Wis.) Spartans, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Titans and Allen (Texas) Wranglers.

During the summers of 2011 and 2012, McDermott worked individually with high school athletes at Personal Trainers World in Cincinnati. McDermott is a 2006 graduate of Holy Cross High School in Louisville. He earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from MSU in 2010.
