Georgetown uses second-half run for win over UPIKE

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – No. 16 Georgetown College used a big second-half run to ease past the University of Pikeville 77-52 Saturday afternoon at the East Kentucky Expo Center.

Faced with an aggressive Tigers defense which forced 17 of UPIKE’s 21 turnovers, the Bears had to shoot from behind the arc for most of the game, but finished only 1-of-21 (4.8%) from long range.

A jump shot by junior Brogan Conley pulled the Bears within six (34-28) with 17:44 to play in the game. But the Tigers nailed the next 12 points of the game. Only three Tigers scored during the stretch, with senior forward Devon King flipping in five, and when junior Lissa Jonas scored on a layup with 1:35 to play, the lead was 46-28.

Georgetown was led by junior guard and reigning National Player of the Week Kourtney Tyra, who finished with a game-high 21 points including a perfect performance of 11-of-11 at the free throw line. Tyra was supported well courtesy of senior forward Devon Golden, who scored 14 points and recorded four steals, and junior guard Andrea Howard’s seven points and nine rebounds.

For the Bears, sophomore center Whitney Belle Jackson led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds, while junior forward Brogan Conley added six points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Sally Roberts, sophomore guard Christin Haney and junior forward Callisha Johnson all also finished with six points.

The Bears, now at 5-12 overall (2-7 in Mid-South Conference play), travel to No. 7 Cumberland University on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. UPIKE will be looking to avenge last week’s 72-58 home loss to the Bulldogs.

Georgetown meanwhile advances to 12-6 overall (6-3 in MSC) and will be traveling to U.Va.-Wise on Monday’s Martin Luther King Day holiday.
