High School Basketball Preview: Cordia Lions

LOTTS CREEK Ky. (WYMT) - The next team in our DQ Grill and Chill countdown to tipoff series is the Cordia Lions.

Cordia failed to meet expectations last season going just 11-18. But they enter this season with expectations that may be even higher and in order to achieve the goals set team chemistry and coming together will be very important.

"I think our defense. Our defense is getting better, but we need to work on it a little more, and you know talking, and just a little more chemistry with the team", says senior guard Zack Owens.

"I think we're working better as a team than last year's team was. I think we have more people, and we work together better" says senior forward Robert Rios.

"We're a quick team this year", says 8th grader Austin Combs. "That's definitely one of the strengths. We got a very good backcourt. I think that's one of the bigger things for us to win this year is just using our quickness to an advantage."

"We realize that we've got to take more steps to get there than a lot of the other teams in this region; Breathitt County, Knott Central, Perry Central, Hazard" says assistant coach Josh Hurt. "But at the same time, we feel like we can do it. But we also have to look at that we need to start small, accomplish things we didn't accomplish last year. Let's get in the district tournament, make a little bit of noise. Then get to the regional tournament where hopefully, once you're there, anything can happen."
