High school basketball preview: Betsy Layne Bobcats

BETSY LAYNE, Ky. (WYMT) - As we continue with our DQ Grill & Chill Countdown to Tip-off previews, we now look at the Betsy Layne Bobcats.

Despite going 23-6 last season, the Bobcats ended the year losing their final two games; the district finals to Prestonsburg and in the first round of the regional tournament to Johnson Central. They also graduated forward Andrew Roberts, but expectations remain high.

"At Betsy Layne, year in and year out, we expect to be very competitive," says head coach Junior Newsome. "We always expect a good team. Our kids know when they come in to our program, they come in to a situation where they're going to have to work hard, give it their all, and we feel like if we do that, we're going to be a pretty good basketball program year in and year out."

"No doubt (losing to Prestonsburg and Johnson Central) hurt, and all summer we've had that in the back of our minds. When we're practicing this year, we're thinking of that, so we don't want that to happen again. Just go out there and give it your all so that won't happen," says Garran Newsome, a senior point guard.

"Play hard because Andrew (Roberts) was a man that went hard every game, went hard every second of every game. So we just got to play hard and step up in his position because he's going to be hard to replace," adds junior Dylan Hamilton.

"Just go 110% the whole game, get after them, get up in their grill, rebound, box out, push the ball, and attack the big guys," says guard Peyton Case.

"Yeah, everybody expects a lot from us. We've been doing really good the past few years and I think they expect that to continue. You know, we work hard every day in practice so that we can make that happen," says Dylan Meade, a junior.
