High school basketball preview: Powell Co. Lady Pirates

Updated: Wed 9:05 PM, Nov 21, 2012

STANTON Ky. (WYMT) - Next up in our DQ Grill and Chill countdown to tip off series are the Powell County Lady Pirates.

Powell County finished with a 16-13 record last season but fell to Knott Central, a team they drew for the 3rd straight year in the first round of the 14th region. With the loss of just one senior from last year, the Lady Pirates are poised to make a run at region.

"This year we've got Keeley back in the post. We've got Nikki outside", said head coach Ken Jones. "We've got Stephanie at the two guard, and Triston at the three. We moved her over from the four, so we are pretty good."

"We just have to play together. Believe in each other, trust each other", said forward Lillian Shelton.

"Well, I think we just need to work harder as a team together and work on our defense", said guard Nikki Wells.

"We return a lot from last year, but we are going to have to get better at the little things", said forward Kelley Rogers. Like, this year, we are working harder on defense. We are having harder practices than we've had in the past and we just have to make up for our size."

"We have to make our fast breaks and take advantage of them. And do everything we can with them. Even though we don't have the size, but we do have the quickness", said guard Stephanie Knox.

"Speed definitely. And, our size is a big difference, but we are really fast", said forward Destiny Peck.

"I think we are pretty high up there, as long as we work together and we have the potential to be number one", said guard Triston Curtis.

The DQ Grill and Chill Roundball preview show with air on Thursday, November 29th from 7-8pm on WYMT. That is when we will announce the initial Alice Lloyd College mountain top ten for the both the boys and the girls.
