WILLIAMSBURG Ky. (WYMT) - For our next DQ Grill and Chill countdown to tip off preview, we look at the Whitley County Colonels.
Last season was a season of transition for the Colonels under first year head coach Jerry Overbey. But with a year of experience and a few additions from the football team, this year's team looks to contend in the 50th district and 13th region.
"All the kids have heart. There wasn't any game that we were out of. I think we played Harlan County, which was #1 in our region at the last game of the year", said head coach Jerry Overbey. "Took down to the wire, ended up losing by three. Had a disappointing game in the district, a little letdown. But I have a lot of kids that have a lot of heart and play hard, and it will show this next year round."
"Last year, coming in to the season, we had only one player with varsity experience. That was Aaron Petry. Now that we all, basically, the whole team has experience now, we'll be a lot better", said senior forward Matt Lawson.
"I think this team is going be real physical. I mean, we have a lot of big bodies down low. And I think that they will be able to overpower some people. I mean, we are not as tall, but we have a lot og strength and a lot of big kids", said senior forward Boston Bryant.
