Wise, Virginia - Brett Hylton delivered a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and UVa-Wise used its strongest defensive effort of the season to post a 4-3 win over visiting Virginia Intermont at Stallard Field on Thursday.
Hytlon’s two run blast gave UVa-Wise its first lead of the day as Virginia Intermont had built a 3-0 lead following the clubs first three trips to the bat rack. Coach Hank Banner’s Cavaliers began to battle back in the bottom of the third inning as Tommy Meier delivered a two RBI single into right field cutting the Cobras lead to one. Two innings later, Hylton stepped to the plate with Steven Allen at second base with two away. The junior proceeded to send a Preston Asbill offering into the road beyond the right field fence to give the Cavs a 4-3 lead.
From there, the UVa-Wise pitching staff was up to the task as R.W. Payne and Ryan Ward hurled consecutive scoreless innings to preserve the win. With the win, UVa-Wise gains a season split with Virginia Intermont and improves to 17-22 on the season. The Cavs will return to action on Friday when they kick off a three game set with Mid-South foe Pikeville; first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. from Stallard Field.
