Indiana Junior All-Stars complete 'double sweep'

LOUISVILLE - Trey Lyles of Indianapolis Tech scored 18 points and James Blackmon Jr. of Marion added 13 points on a perfect shooting performance Saturday (June 8) at St. Xavier High School, lifting the IndyStar.com Indiana Junior All-Star boys to an 86-73 victory over Kentucky and a "double sweep" of the 2013 series.

Mack Mercer of Plymouth chipped in 10 points for Indiana, which opened the second-year series with a 108-102 win in overtime on Friday at Greenfield-Central High School in Greenfield, Ind. That gave the Indiana boys a 3-1 series edge after the boys' teams split in the inaugural Junior games in 2012.

Earlier Saturday, Ana Owens of Lawrence North and Lauren Whitlatch of Bloomington South each scored 13 points to propel Indiana to a 77-57 victory and a second consecutive sweep of the girls' series. On Friday, the Indiana girls prevailed 79-67.

In a game played in four eight-minute quarters, the Indiana boys shot 53 percent from the field (33-of-62) en route to a convincing decision. Lyles dropped in 7-of-12 from the field, while Blackmon was 5-of-5 from the floor, including 3-of-3 on 3-pointers, as they paced a well-rounded offense.

Park Tudor's Trevon Bluiett, Greensburg's Bryant McIntosh and Guerin Catholic's Aaron Brennan each contributed eight points for the winners, while Greensburg's Sean Seller tallied seven points and Evansville Bosse's JaQuan Lyle had five points.

LaMontray Harris of Pleasure Ridge Park scored 14 points and Justin Johnson of Perry County Central netted 11 points to lead Kentucky.
Lyles scored six points and Mercer five as Indiana pounded ball inside early to take a 24-14 lead in the first quarter. Kentucky's Cunningham and Johnson each scored four in the second quarter as the Bluegrass boys cut their deficit to 41-36 at the half.

The Hoosier boys broke the contest open in the third quarter, Blackmon and Sellers each scoring five in the period as the visitors pushed their lead to 69-54 with a 28-18 burst. Lyles, Mercer and Brennan also had four points apiece in the quarter.

In the final frame, Harris scored 11 points for Kentucky but the Bluegrass side never seriously challenged down the stretch as Indiana countered with four points from Carmel's Zach McRoberts, three from Brennan and single baskets from six other players.

In the girls' game, Indiana used a balanced attack with Evansville Mater Dei's Maura Muensterman (11 points), Mt. Vernon (Fortville)'s Erica Moore (11 points) and Rushville's Mackenzie Campbell (10 points) joining Owens and Whitlatch in double figures.

The game was close for a quarter, but the Hoosiers used a 24-14 second-quarter surge to claim a 38-26 lead at intermission. Owens and Whitlatch each scored five in the quarter, while Campbell and Whitney Jennings of Logansport chipped in four apiece.

Indiana extended its advantage to 60-40 at the third stop, Sydney Buck of Homestead keying the charge with six points on two 3-pointers in the period.

For the game, Indiana shot 48 percent from the field (27-of-56), including 44 percent from 3-point range (7-of-16), plus 80 percent from the line (16-of-20). Indiana also forced Kentucky into 24 turnovers while committing just 14. Kentucky shot 43 percent from the field (18-fo-41), 45 percent on 3-pointers (5-of-11) and 57 percent on free throws (16-of-28).
