Jim Brown joins women's basketball coaching staff

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Jim Brown, who has 20+ years coaching in Kentucky, has been named an assistant women's basketball coach at Morehead State.

Brown will continue his partnership with newly hired MSU Head Coach Greg Todd. He served eight seasons as an assistant under Todd at Transylvania University.

"I'm looking forward to building a successful program here at MSU," Brown said. "Greg (Todd) has always been a coach who lets his assistants have a part in everything the program does. I have been blessed to have had a professional relationship with him for 18 years."

Prior to his stint at Transylvania, Brown was at Somerset (Ky.) High School for 16 seasons, including three as the head coach of the girls varsity program and 13 as an assistant. He also served as the school's softball coach from 1998-2003.

During his tenure at Transylvania, he helped the program to four Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) championships and three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. The Pioneers were 157-64 in his eight seasons, including a 26-3 record in 2013-14 which established the school record for wins.

"I don't think anybody will outwork Jim," Todd said. "I am thrilled to have on him on my staff again and look forward to the next several years."

Brown mentored three HCAC Players of the Year and helped lead TU to 32 conference victories in his last two campaigns.

Brown also served as an assistant coach for a pair of teams in the Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Game and two Kentucky All-Star AAU teams that won state titles.

"I feel like with Greg's and my background in the state, we have a great network of high school coaches to work with," Brown added. "My goal is to help get the MSU program back to where it has been. We want to have this team spoken well of in the state and region."

A 1977 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy, he received a master's degree from Coppin State in 2002.

He and his wife, Barbara, have one daughter (Gretchen), who played collegiate basketball at Transylvania.
