Johnson fires Bears past No. 13 Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Junior guard Callisha Johnson fired in 31 points and scored the go-ahead basket with 18 seconds left to give the University of Pikeville a 66-62 win over No. 13 Georgetown College Thursday night at Davis-Reid Alumni Gymasium.

After Georgetown missed a shot to tie, freshman Peyton Wright went to the line and sank a free throw with 5.8 seconds left to make it a three-point lead.

After a Tiger timeout, she made it a two-possession game with the second toss.

Wright was equally solid; after a scoreless first period, she finished with 15 markers and 13 rebounds while blocking four shots.

The win made the Bears 8-15 on the season and 4-10 in the Mid-South Conference as they battle to qualify for the league’s eight-team tournament at the end of the month.

It was also the third straight win for the Bears since Coach Bill Watson informed the school of his intention to retire at the end of the season.

Georgetown fell to 16-8 on the season, 10-5 in the league.

It appeared Georgetown was going to have an easy go of it and led 28-16 after a basket by Jessica Foster with 5:17 to play in the half. But after that, the Tigers didn’t score again in the half while the Bears rolled up 14 unanswered points.

Whitney Belle Jackson had four while the torrid Johnson flipped in the other 10, going 6-of-6 from the line during the stretch. When she tossed in a pair from the stripe with 28.4 seconds left in the half, she had 20 and the Bears had a 30-28 lead which they took to the break.

Pikeville won the game while shooting only 40.3 percent overall and 23.1 percent from the arc. They did, however, hit 9-of-10 from the line.

Georgetown lost thanks to shooting only 31.1 percent overall and 4-of-25 (16 percent) from the arc. While the Bears took care of business from the line, the Tigers were only 12-of-20.

Pikeville will remain on the road, visiting St. Catharine College on Saturday at 2 p.m. Georgetown will be home on Saturday, hosting U.Va.-Wise.
