GRAYSON, Ky. - The Union football team fell to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play after dropping a 21-7 decision at Kentucky Christian in Mid-South Conference East play on Saturday.
With the win, the Knights improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the MSC East.
Both teams struggled offensively as they combined for 383 total yards in offense. Union outgained Kentucky Christian 208-175 in total offense as neither team passed for more then 95 yards. The Bulldogs rushed for 116 yards while throwing for 92. The Knights threw for 95 yards and ran for 80. There were only 29 first downs with Kentucky Christian finishing with a 15-14 edge.
The teams combined to go 3-for-28 on third down with Union going 2-for-14.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Knights scored two quick touchdowns before the end of the half. With 2:23 to go, Austin Dehart scored on a 5-yard run to make it a 7-0 lead. After forcing Union to go three-and-out, Kentucky Christian took over on a its own 49 with 1:04 still left. Four plays later, Cole Cooper punched the ball in from the 1 to send the Knights into the half up 14-0.
Midway through the third, Union finally cracked the scoring column when it covered 80 yards in only five plays. Rob Brown capped the drove with a 2-yard run to make it 14-7 KCU with 8:00 on the clock. The touchdown was set up by a 65-yard by Leonard Dixon.
Early in the fourth, the Knights took advantage of Bulldog fumble, taking over at the Union 27. Cooper ended the five-play drive with a 5-yard scoring run to put Kentucky Christian ahead 21-7 with 10:45 remaining.
Union tried to mount a comeback, driving the ball to the KCU 30 and 20 on its next two possessions. However, the Bulldogs' drives stalled there as the Knights held on for the 21-7 win.
Dixon led Union in rushing with 67 yards on five carries, while Brown followed with 51 yards on 17 carries.
Cooper paced the Knights' ground game with 34 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
Union returns home next Saturday to play host to UVA-Wise in another MSC East contest. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
