Kentucky, Louisville Prepare for Governor’s Cup Battle

Kentucky quarterback Morgan Newton is running the football more and Coach Joker Phillips needs to see more of that especially this Saturday against Louisville.

Newton rushed 13-times for 60-yards including this fourth and goal touchdown to ice the win against Central Michigan.

Phillips says if Morgan continues to show promise in the running game, it adds another dimension to his team to win their fifth straight over the Cards.

"He's a big, physical runner also, especially when he gets in the secondary, guys start bouncing off of him,” Phillips says. “He's faster than he looks. Morgan Newton is faster than he looks. He showed it in the first game. He's got some speed. We'll definitely have to run him. We'll get into the (shot)gun a little bit more. When we get in the gun, that gives us a two-back running game.”

Earlier this week... Cardinals Coach Charlie Strong called Kentucky quote "the better team." His players are using that comment as motivation to prepare for the Cats.

Louisville quarterback Will Stein agrees with his coach, but nothing has changed as they prep to head to commonwealth stadium on Saturday.

“Kentucky is the better team,” Stein says. “They're 2-0. They return 10 guys on defense. All five of their offensive lineman are back so they definitely have the better squad right now as he puts it. but we're using that as motivation. He's a big time motivator so a lot what he says, we can't take it literally but yeah we're definitely going to use that to our advantage this week and prepare like we're going to win the game"
