Klaiber tosses two-hitter, Cavs split with Tigers

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Runs were at a premium on Saturday as UVa-Wise and Campbellsville University split a Mid-South Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday. The visiting Cavaliers ended the Tigers 13 game winning streak with a 2-1, game one victory before the host scored a 2-0 victory in the finale.

Steven Klaiber would pitch the best game of his young career in the opener as he hurled a complete game, two-hitter, without allowing an earned run in the game one victory.

UVa-Wise (7-14, 3-5 Mid-South) staked Klaiber to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Michael McCollum lined a one-out double and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Tommy Meier took advantage of a drawn back infield and produced an RBI groundout. Two innings later, the Cavaliers would add a second run as Chaz Hall led off the third frame with a double, moved to third on a groundout by Tyler Lighton, and scored on an RBI groundout by Steven Allen.

Klaiber and Campbellsville (22-5, 7-1 Mid-South) starter Patrick McMeel would exchange zeros all the way to the bottom of the eighth inning. In the eighth inning, the Tigers would take advantage of three Cavalier errors to score a run. Despite the three errors, Klaiber got out of the jam as he induced a fly out off the bat of Keaton Neeb with the tying and go ahead run on base. In the ninth, Klaiber retired Campbellsville in order to notch his first collegiate victory.

In total, Klaiber struck out four and walked just one as he improved his record to 1-2. McMeel was nearly equally as impressive for Campbellsville as he struck out nine and walked one in suffering the complete game loss, his record is now 2-1.

Game two saw Campbellsville take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two out, two-RBI double by Michael Bush. The two run advantage would be all that Tigers starter Bret DeRooy would need. The left-hander limited UVa-Wise to just four hits in firing a complete game shutout. The victory improved DeRooy’s record to 2-1 on the year; Justin Wilson was the hard luck loser as he allowed just the two runs on three hits in the complete game loss. Wilson’s record is now 1-2 on the season.

The two clubs will complete the three game series with a nine inning affair on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon from HIG Field in Campbellsville.
