The number three Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters are on a roll once again as they are 14-0 heading down the stretch of the season.
It's 2012 and Lincoln Memorial has shown no signs of slowing down at 14-0.
Last season, the Railsplitters went 27-3, earning the South Atlantic Conference Championship, and the school's first ever NCAA Division Two National Tournament Appearance.
So the Splitters are 41-3 in the past two seasons.
“We came a long way since my freshman year,” Senior Guard Brandon Armstrong says. “Coach came to my school and told me that this moment was going to come. It wasn't going to come fast but by the end of my career we were going to compete for the National Championship.”
So what's the reason behind their recent success? They've gotten it done on the defensive end.
LMU ranks second in all of division two in Field Goal Percentage at less than 36-percent.
They also rank in the top five in rebounding Margin at almost 13 per contest and in scoring margin.
“I think to be elite, you have got to be good on both ends,” Coach Josh Shertz says. “Defense gets you to the postseason, but the combination of defense and offense wins you championships. No wasted days. We' have to be focused and trying to get better each day so when march hits and the NCAA Tournament hits, we're prepared to play our best basketball.”
A big reason behind their success lies on the shoulders of Forward Desmond Johnson.
The Former Cumberland High School Standout has stuck with the program for all four years and has been a vital asset to building the Railsplitters Program.
“I'm blessed to be in the situation that I am,” Johnson says. “I really enjoy being here for the past three years, you know, done a lot of things, got a lot of accolades, awards and what not. And I can only be proud of what I’ve done and only hope to do better things in the future.”
The Splitters only had a taste of the NCAA Tournament, as they fell in the first round.
So you could say that's motivating them to compete even harder to help bring a National Championship to Harrogate, TN.
