Lady Bulldogs remain No. 18 in NAIA poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the third week in a row, Union is the 18th-ranked team in the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25, the national office announced Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs (8-2 overall, 2-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference) received 154 total voting points, placing them five behind No. 17 Valley City State (S.D.) and six ahead of No. 19 St. Thomas (Fla.).

For the fourth-straight time, Concordia (Neb.) claims the No. 1 ranking in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25. The Bulldogs collected all 13 first place-votes and 343 points in the third edition of the Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

Concordia defeated its second top-five ranked team on Dec. 5 with a 72-65 win over then-No. 5 Briar Cliff (Iowa). The Bulldogs concluded their week with a 20-point victory, 78-58, against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.). With the pair of wins, Concordia is tied with a NAIA best 12-game winning streak.

Holding steady at No. 2 is Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats, who are tied with Concordia for the NAIA's longest winning streak, notched 332 points. For the second-straight week, No. 3 Morningside (Iowa) and No. 4 College of the Ozarks (Mo.) hold their positions. The Mustangs and Bobcats tallied 319 points and 310 points, respectfully. No. 5 Davenport (Mich.) moves up one spot to round out the top five with 295 points.

Making the biggest jump this week was Southwestern (Kan.) moving from No. 24 to No. 21. The Moundbuilders won both of their match-ups by an average of 27.5 points. On Dec. 6, Southwestern downed Sterling (Kan.), 75-40, and continued its dominating play against McPherson on Dec. 8 with a 71-51 victory.

Joining the Top 25 is No. 24 Menlo (Calif.). In the last two games, the Oaks defeated Oregon Tech, 79-61 and NAIA Division I Biola (Calif.), 77-74. Menlo is currently on a 10-game winning-streak. This is the first time the Oaks have been ranked since the 2007-08 preseason poll.

Falling out of the Coaches' Poll was Roosevelt (Ill.) (No. 23).

Twelve of the 13 Division II women's basketball conferences/independents are represented throughout the Top 25, led by the Crossroads League with five ranked teams. The Great Plains Athletic Conference follows with four teams.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences and Independents. The fourth regular-season poll will be announced on Jan. 8.

Union returns to action on Dec. 28-29 when it hosts the Union College Holiday Classic.
