WALESKA, Ga. - The Union College softball team was swept in a doubleheader at No. 13 Reinhardt on Tuesday evening in Appalachian Athletic Conference Action. The host Lady Eagles won game one 8-0 (in six innings), then captured game two over the Lady Bulldogs, 6-2.
With the losses, UC fell to 7-7 overall, 2-2 in the AAC, while Reinhardt improved to 20-3, 4-0 in the AAC with the victories.
In game one, the Lady Bulldogs offense could only muster five hits against RU starter and reigning AAC Pitcher of the Week Maddie Monroe, as the Lady Eagles scored runs in four straight innings to post the eight-run win in six.
UC starter Katie Perkins held her own through the first two innings, tossing a pair of shutout frames. But, in the third, Reinhardt finally got on the board with a run to go up 1-0, then added a pair of runs in the fourth to go up 3-0. The Lady Eagles put UC away with a three run fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead, and ended the game in the sixth with a two-run frame.
At the plate, Cameron Campbell was the only UC player to have a multiple-hit game, going 2-for-3 in the loss. In the circle, Monroe earned the win (11-0) striking out six in six innings of work. Perkins (5-2) took the loss for the Lady Bulldogs.
Game two was a defensive struggle through the first four innings, with RU holding a slim 1-0 lead over UC going into the fifth.
In the top half of the inning, the Lady Bulldogs knotted the game up at one. But, in the bottom half of the inning, UC made several critical defensive mistakes that the Lady Eagles pounced on, as RU exploded for five runs in the frame to open up a 6-1 lead after five.
UC added the game’s final run in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late, as Reinhardt completed the AAC sweep with a four-run win.
Overall in the second game, Campbell led the way again at the dish, going 2-for-2 with a solo home run. Meanwhile, Jamie Cyrus was 2-for-3 and Jennifer Vanover had an RBI single. In the circle, Gianna Schauer took the loss (2-5), despite only giving up two earned runs on the night. Kelsey Floyd (4-3) was the winner for Reinhardt.
