BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union enters the 2013 Appalachian Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will open play against sixth-seeded Virginia Intermont on Thursday, the league announced Sunday.
The tournament opens Wednesday with the play-in games and concludes on Saturday with the championship. The event is being held at the MeadowView Marriott Conference Resort & Convention Center in Kingsport, Tenn.
The Lady Bulldogs (19-9 overall, 12-6 AAC) split the regular-season series with the Lady Cobras (14-16 overall, 9-9 AAC) with each winning on their home floors. On Jan. 8, Viriginia Intermont puled out a 69-68 decision, while Union recorded a 71-63 victory on Feb. 2.
Milligan (Tenn.) is the regular-season champion and top-seeded team. Since the league has 10 teams, the conference has two automatic berths to the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament. The Buffaloes (22-8 overall, 16-2) receive one of those bids by virtue of winning the regular-season title. The tournament winner will collect the other. If Milligan wins the tournament, the regular-season runner-up gets the berth.
Tennessee Wesleyan (17-10 overall, 14-4 AAC) is the No. 2 seed.
On Wednesday, the tourament gets underway with No. 8 Columbia (S.C.) (8-22 overall, 5-13 AAC) facing Point (Ga.) (6-23 overall, 4-14 AAC) at 12 p.m. No. 7 Montreat (N.C.) (17-13 overall, 7-11 AAC) will then take on No. 10 St. Andrews (N.C.) (3-24 overall, 1-17 AAC) at 1:45 p.m.
Milligan opens play Thursday at 8:30 a.m. against the Columbia/Point winner. No. 4 Bryan (Tenn.) (17-11 overall, 11-7 AAC) takes on No. 5 Reinhardt (Ga.) (16-14 overall, 11-7 AAC) at 10:15 a.m. At 3:30 p.m., Tennessee Wesleyan meets up with the Montreat/St. Andrews winner, while Union and Virginia Intermont square off at 5:15 p.m.
The semifinals are set for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Friday with the championship game slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
