ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Lincoln Memorial University women's cross country team has been selected seventh in the 2014 South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches' poll, league officials announced on Thursday.
The preseason coaches' poll ranks the 12 South Atlantic Conference women's cross country teams heading into the upcoming season based on the results of a league-wide vote. A first-place vote allots 11 points to the recipient, while a last-place vote only accounts for a single point.
In 2013, the Lady Railsplitters posted a pair of top-five regular season finishes before concluding the cross country season with a seventh-place effort at the Food Lion SAC Championship and a 19th-place run at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet. The Lady Railsplitters were tabbed to repeat that seventh-place run in 2014, receiving 59 total points in the preseason poll.
The top spot in the poll went to Wingate, who garnered 11 of the 12 first-place votes to total 121 points. Last season, the Bulldogs captured the Food Lion SAC Championship with the race's top-four individual finishers. Wingate later went on to win the NCAA Southeast Region title before completing their season with a 26th-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship.
The No. 2 poll position went to Queens, who totaled 110 points. Last season, the Royals finished as the runner-up to the Bulldogs at the Food Lion SAC Championship lead by a pair of All-SAC finishers.
Third place in the poll went to Mars Hill with a total of 97 points, while the remainder of the top half of the poll was comprised of No.4 Anderson (91), No.5 Lenoir-Rhyne (86), the recipient of the final first-place vote, and No.6 Brevard (69).
Following the Lady Railsplitters, Catawba (44) and Carson-Newman (39) were eighth and ninth. While the bottom three sports fell to Tusculum (32), Coker (23), and Newberry (21), respectively.
The Lady Railsplitters are listed to begin the season on September 5, as they travel to Salisbury, N.C. for the Catawba Invitational. The 2014 Food Lion SAC Championship meet is scheduled for November 11 in Salisbury, N.C.
