Lady Railsplitters win three In Mid-South classic to extend winning steak to five games

DUNCAN, SC -- The Lady Railsplitter softball team captured victories in all three of their games at the Mid-South Classic this past weekend, grabbing a 7-6 win over Lander, a 10-1 victory over Augusta State and a 12-11 triumph over King College to extend their winning streak to five games. By picking up three games this weekend, Lincoln Memorial University (15-8) pushed out to 13-2 over their last 15 appearances on the field.

Lincoln Memorial is poised for four games this week, beginning on Tuesday with a doubleheader in Bristol, Virginia against Virginia Intermont. Over the weekend, the Lady Railsplitters return to Dorothy Neely Field and kickoff South Atlantic Conference play with a two-game set against Wingate.

Game One (Friday, March 1)

Lander 6

The Lady Railsplitters scored four runs in the top half of the seventh and withstood a rally by Lander in the bottom half of that frame to escape with a 7-6 decision over the Bearcats.

Samantha Smith went the distance on the mound for the Lady Railsplitters, recording six strikeouts and working around 10 hits to record a complete game victory.

The two teams were knotted in a 3-3 stalemate heading into the top of the seventh until the Lady Railsplitters uncorked four runs in that frame to grab command of the board. Amanda Snow sparked the rally with a lead off double and scored on Cierra Mudd's single two batters later. A throwing error later in the stanza allowed Mudd and Laura Taricano, who was issued a walk, to score, while Samantha Smith capped the scoring with an RBI single to propel the Lady Railsplitters to a 7-3 advantage.

The Bearcats popped three hits and plated three runs in the home half of the seventh, however, Samantha Smith shut the door by striking out Casey Corbitt and forcing a fly out off the bat of Nikki Montesanti to give the Lady Railsplitters a 7-6 victory. Kelsey Davis spearheaded the scoring in that frame for the Bearcats with a two-run double but was left stranded at second base as the potential game-tying run.

Lincoln Memorial slammed nine hits in the game with Cierra Mudd and Danae Reed headlining that effort with multi-hit games. Andrea Foster got in on the act with a one-for-four effort bolstered by two runs and an RBI.

Game Three (Sunday, March 3)
Lincoln Memorial 12
King 11 (8 innings)

In a dominant offensive performance by both teams, the Lady Railsplitters came up on the winning side after erasing a 10-5 deficit with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the seventh frame.

The Lady Railsplitters found themselves in a five-run hole heading into the final inning of regulation, however, they pounded out five hits and put five runs on the board to square the game at 10 apiece. Danae Reed headlined that comeback effort with a three-run blast while Ashley Hanes and Sarah Walz posted a pair of run-scoring singles later in the inning to knot the game. The Lady Railsplitters had the bases chucked with only one out in the bottom of the seventh, however, a infield fly and a fly out stymied that rally and sent the game into extra innings.

The Tornado answered by putting a run on the board in the top of the eighth, as Christina Melcher popped an RBI double to give King an 11-10 lead. However, the Lady Railsplitters responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of that frame to escape with the victory. A fielding error by the Tornado first baseman allowed both Danae Reed and Cierra Mudd to score to give LMU the walkoff win, 12-11, in eight innings.

The two teams combined for 27 hits in the game with LMU taking a slight 14-13 advantage in that category. Brianna Mulkey was stellar in the game with a perfect four-for-four day at the dish with four runs to her credit, while Ashley Hanes and Amanda Snow chimed in with a pair of hits. Danae Reed spearheaded the run production with three RBI, while Hanes and Kirstin Toole notched a a pair of RBI apiece.

Samantha Smith (10-4) earned her third win of the weekend with 5.1 innings of work on the mound for the Lady Railsplitters in which she pitched around nine hits to only allow three earned runs. Kirstin Toole tossed 2.2 innings in relief without an earned run to her credit despite allowing four hits over that span.
