HARROGATE, TN -- The Lady Railsplitters made quick work of the University of the Cumberlands on Thursday afternoon, as they swept a softball doubleheader over the Patriots by scores of 9-1 and 15-3 at Dorothy Neely Field. The sweep pushes LMU back on the positive side at 7-5 on the season.
Game One- Lincoln Memorial-9
Cumberlands-1 (6 innings)
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the Patriots got on the board first with a run in the top of the third frame. Ashley Wampler drove in the lone Patriot run in that inning with a two-out RBI double.
The Lady Railsplitters broke into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor McGinnins and Cierra Mudd hit back-to-back to doubles to put the first run on the board. Later in the frame, with runners on second and third, Brianna Mulkey knocked home two with a single through the right side.
Bridget Eicher homered in the bottom of the fifth to put two more runs on the board and Kelly Dreier plated another with an RBI single in that stanza.
With the Lady Railsplitters on top 6-1, they reached the run rule with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to capture a shortened 9-1 victory. Taylor McGinnis' two-run triple highlighted the frame and she would later score the game-clinching run with a single from Cierra Mudd.
Freshman Amanda Snow took home the win and moves to 4-2 on the season. She finished with five innings pitched, allowing no earned runs and striking out six. Meghan LaFevor threw a perfect inning in relief.
The Lady Railsplitters outhit the Patriots 12-3 in the contest and Taylor McGinnis led the attack with her 4-4 performance with three runs and two RBIs. Cierra Mudd added three hits for Lincoln Memorial in the affair.
Game Two- Lincoln Memorial-15
Cumberlands-3 (5 innings)
The Lady Railsplitters continued their offensive onslaught in game two, as they combined for 11 runs in the first two innings of play to jump out to a commanding lead.
In the first frame, the first seven batters reached safely for the Lady Railsplitters. Taylor McGinnis' two-run double highlighted the scoring rally and Bridget Eicher also added an RBI single in the stanza.
In the second, the Lady Railsplitters capitalized on two errors and two free bases from the Patriots to run out six more runs. Kelly Dreier also knocked a two-run single in that inning to power the offensive output.
The two teams traded runs in the third inning and the Patriots added another in the top of the fourth to make it a 12-2 game heading into the bottom of the fourth. In that inning, the Lady Railsplitters put the game out of reach with a three-run scoring rally, catapulted by Kristi Franz's two-run double and Amanda Snow's RBI double.
LMU would allow a run to the Patriots in the top of the fifth but it was not enough as the Lady Railsplitters captured a five inning 15-3 victory to take the sweep over the University of the Cumberlands.
Meghan LaFevor picked up the win with four innings pitched in which she allowed only one earned run and five hits. She moves to 3-1 on the young season.
The Lady Railsplitters nearly doubled up the Patriots in the hit column as they pounded out 13 hits to seven for Cumberlands. Bridget Eicher went a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI. Taylor McGinnis added a hit and three RBIs. Kristi Franz also knocked in three runs and went 2-3 at the dish.
Lincoln Memorial will now hit the road this weekend for the Columbus State Classic where they will play four games in two days. They take on host, Columbus State, on Friday, February 24th at noon.
