SPRINGFIELD, Ky. – St. Catharine College lined 14 hits, took advantage of three UVa-Wise errors, and scored 10 runs en route to its 14th consecutive victory with a 10-9 win at Elden-Haydon Baseball Complex on Saturday.
The victorious Patriots (14-6, 1-0 MSC) built a 7-1 lead and held on to post the victory despite a four run ninth inning by the Cavaliers (4-9, 1-3 MSC). Five St. Catharine players had multi-hit days while Eddie Rivera improved to 5-0 on the year by allowing just two runs in his six innings of work. Rivera also fanned eight to run his season total to a team-high 42.
In defeat, UVa-Wise’s Michael McCollom had a three hit day at the plate while scoring a run. Teammates Steven Allen, Tommy Meier, and Ty Lighton each added two hits while combining to score a pair of runs and produce four RBIs. Four Cavalier pitchers did not allow an earned run in the game, led by Steven Klaiber’s 3.1 innings of no earned run baseball.
Game two of the double header was called for fear of darkness. The series will resume tomorrow with a double header starter at noon. Game one of the twin-bill will be a nine inning affair with game two being a seven inning contest.
