ROCK HILL, SC -- Lincoln Memorial University finished in the middle of the pack of the SAC Echols Athletic Excellence Award standings, as the Railsplitters capped the 2011-12 season in fifth-place.
The SAC Echols Athletic Excellence Award is presented annually to the member athletic department that earns the highest point total based on cumulative final standings in all of the conference's sports.
Regular-season finish is used in the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's tennis, baseball and softball, while SAC Championship results are used for men's and women's cross country and men's and women's golf.
The Railsplitters finished in fifth-place in the final standings, 2.5 points ahead of Newberry College and 3.5 points in front of Carson-Newman College. For the sixth-consecutive year, Wingate University took the award with a total of 110 points, 21.5 points ahead of second-place finisher, Anderson University.
LMU's fifth-place finish was bolstered by four top-three finishes in the regular season. The volleyball team sparked the effort by garnering a tie in second-place at the conclusion of the regular season, finishing 14-4 in the SAC. That effort was paired with a third-place finish by the men's soccer team as they notched a 6-3 record in the SAC.
The men's basketball team put in a second-place finsh for LMU as they ended the regular season with a 14-4 mark in the South Atlantic Conference. Men's tennis took a third-place finish after completing the regular season schedule at 7-2.
The Lady Railsplitter golf team's runner-up finish in the 2012 SAC Championship provided a tremendous contribution to the effort for Lincoln Memorial University in 2011-12.
The Echols Athletic Excellence Award will be presented at the conference's Hall of Fame banquet on June 7th.
