Local players sweep Mid South Conference football weekly awards

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- University of Pikeville's Trevor Hoskins and Demitri Travis and University of the Cumberlands' Mitchell Mascaro are the Mid-South Conference Football Players of the Week for the week ending Sept. 25, conference officials announced on Monday.

The weekly conference honor is the second this season for Hoskins and the first for Travis and Mascaro.

Hoskins tied a single-game program records with six touchdowns passes to earn MSC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Middlesboro, Ky., junior quarterback completed 36-of-51 passes for 481 yards to help the Bears beat Faulkner University 51-34. In addition to matching the program's touchdown mark, Hoskins broke his own school record for completions in a game.

During Saturday's win, Hoskins became the program's all-time leader in passing yards (4,168). He set the mark while playing in just 14 games.

This season, Hoskins ranks second in the Mid-South Conference in total offense (342.3 yards per game) and passing (340.5). His 15 touchdown passes leads the conference.

Travis recorded three interceptions on Saturday to earn MSC Defensive Player of the Week.

The Hazard, Ky., sophomore defensive back picked the reigning NAIA Offensive Player of the Week on three different occasions, all in Pikeville territory.

Travis added seven tackles to his afternoon in the Bears' win.

With is three interceptions, Travis leads the MSC and is third in the NAIA with four picks this season.

With the win, Pikeville improves to 3-1 on the season.

Mascaro averaged 48.5 yards per punt on Saturday to earn MSC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

The Knoxville, Tenn., sophomore punter finished the afternoon placing four of his six punts inside the Bethel University 20 yard line. Mascaro finished the game with a long of 55 yards in the Patriots' 35-28 loss.

This season, Mascaro leads the MSC and ranks third in the NAIA with a 42.9 yards per punt average.

Cumberlands falls to 2-2 on the season with the loss.

The next MSC Player of the Week awards are scheduled to be announced on Monday, Oct. 3.
