Logan Johnson keeping Family Tradition alive

In football, you have many teams that pride themselves on tradition. But one quarterback in the mountains is keeping his family legacy alive

Former Leslie County Quarterback Tim Couch has done it all. He set state records in high school. Set College Records for the University of Kentucky and played in the NFL. But what you might not know is his legacy has continued in the Mountains in Letcher County Central Quarterback, Logan Johnson.

“He’s my first cousin,” Couch says. “I’ve been working with him. Any time he comes to the house and we throw the ball around been doing it since he was a little kid.”

Couch was on the sidelines to watch Johnson lead his team to a 35-34 Double Overtime victory against Madison Central back on August 20th. Johnson, who showed off the family roots by throwing the game winning touchdown against the Indians, says having his hall of fame cousin there with him means a lot.

“It’s an honor to have him here watching me and he's my cousin and I love it when he has the chance to come watch me” Johnson says. “It really means something to me. He's showed me a lot of things, stuff a lot of other people couldn't man. It's great to have him as a cousin.”

“Every time I get a chance to come and watch him, I try to take advantage of it,” Couch says. “He's fun to watch and a really good football player. He's off to a good start.”

In keeping up with the family tradition, Letcher County Central Coach Mike Whitaker also coached Couch when he was in High School. He says while the two are related, their styles of play are very different which he has had the honor of coaching.

“It started with Greg, his older brother but you know they're all different,” Whitaker says. “And Logan’s doing a great job for us and he plays every down for us on defense and special teams he's a great competitor.”

Johnson and the Rest of the Cougars have their sights set on the playoffs and with the support of a family member who happens to be one of the best Quarterbacks in Kentucky football history, they have all the support they need to reach their goals.
