LEXINGTON, Ky. -- After belting two homers and hitting .462 during a four-game week, Kentucky junior catcher Luke Maile has been named Southeastern Conference Co-Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon by the league office.
A native of Crestview Hills, Ky., Maile won his second SEC Player of the Week of the year after helping lead UK to its first series win over a No. 1 ranked team in program history last weekend as the Wildcats bested LSU.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder batted .462 (6-for-13) during the week with two homers, one double, five RBI and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Maile’s two homers bring him into the league lead with 11 home runs in 2012, with the 2009 Kentucky High School Mr. Baseball batting .331 with 10 doubles, 41 RBI and eight steals on the year.
Maile is the third UK SEC Player of the Week this year, joining Zac Zellers. In addition, UK standouts Austin Cousino and A.J. Reed have been named SEC Freshman of the Week during the record-shattering UK 2012 season.
The Wildcats soared to a No. 1 national ranking for the third week of 2012 on Monday, checking in a program-best No. 2 in the Baseball America top-25 and No. 3 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches’ poll. Kentucky is off to the best start to a season and conference play in program history, winning all six of its league weekends and sitting alone atop the SEC standings.
No. 1 Kentucky (35-6, 13-5 SEC) returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to face No. 23 Louisville at Jim Patterson Stadium for a 6 p.m. ET first pitch. The game will be broadcast live on the UK IMG Radio Network, available in Central Kentucky on WLAP 630-AM, in Louisville on WKJK 1080-AM and online at UKathletics.com.
