MSU names Burnett Defensive Coordinator

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Phil Burnett, who has been a fixture in college football since the mid-1980s, has been hired as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Morehead State.

“Phil has been a friend and mentor to me since the late 1990s, when we first worked together at California University (Pa.),” Head Coach Rob Tenyer said. “Phil played Division I football at Northern Illinois in the mid-1980s, and has been involved with the college game ever since.”

Burnett spent the 2012 season as the defensive line coach at Crown Point (Ind.) High School. He spent the 2011 campaign as a defensive consultant for NCAA Division II member UNC Pembroke.

Burnett served as the defensive line coach at Ball State from 2003-10. He helped the Cardinals to two Mid-American Conference West Division championships (2007, 2008), an International Bowl appearance (2008) and GMAC Bowl berth (2009).

Ball State was nationally-ranked 10 consecutive weeks during the 2008 campaign. Its highest mark was No. 12 in both the Associated Press and Bowl Championship Series polls.

Burnett served as the defensive line and special teams coach at California University (Pa.) from 1997-2002. He also coordinated all football operations for the Vulcans.

His first full-time assistant coaching stint came at Defiance College (Ohio) from 1994-96, where he served as an interim head coach, strength coach and intramurals director.

Burnett also spent time as an assistant recruiting coordinator and graduate assistant at Oregon State from 1991-93 and a graduate and faculty assistant at Northern Illinois from 1988-90.

“Phil has worked under several quality coaches, like Jerry Pettibone, Brady Hoke and Stan Parrish, who have all led programs at the highest level of Division I,” Tenyer said. “He helped Ball State to two Mid-American Conference division titles and a pair of Bowl Game appearances.”

A native of Hobart, Ind., Burnett was a center and long snapper at Northern Illinois from 1983-87. He earned a bachelor’s degree in education from NIU in 1988 and master’s degree from OSU in 1992.
