PADUCHA, Ky. (WYMT) -- McCracken County's Zy'aire Hughes -- also known as "Fish" to his teammates -- verbally committed to Kentucky on Saturday evening, becoming the second in-state 2016 commit for Mark Stoops.
Hughes, who has started since he was a freshman at quarterback for (6A) McCracken County in Paducha, Ky., chose Kentucky over Purdue and Western Kentucky. However, he is likely to play wide receiver at UK.
Hughes talked with WYMT Saturday night and said he has plenty to work on these next two high school football seasons.
"Aw, man, get my confidence up really -- that's a whole 'nother stage right there,” Hughes said. “That's a big step right there ... SEC football. At the same time, I just want to bring our school a championship.”
Hughes threw for more than 2,400 yards and 23 touchdowns this past season.
He believed Lexington was a good fit for him.
“That's just the place I want to be. It feels like home,” he said. “Whenever I go there, they treat me like I am part of their family so I mine as well become part of their family."
