McDaniel wins Kentucky State Amateur championship, makes history

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. Some history was made Thursday out in Bowling Green, and one local athlete was the one causing the stir.

Clay County junior to be Tyler "Chip" McDaniel won the 2013 Kentucky State Amateur golf championship, shooting a 203 13-under for the tournament, and winning the event by six strokes. McDaniel becomes the youngest golfer to ever win the Kentucky State Amateur championship.

"It makes me feel like I'm a part of history," says McDaniel. "It feels pretty awesome to be considered that good at that age. It's a feeling of relief and happiness, especially after last year's bad blood. I put myself in contention again and I got the job done this time and it felt great."

McDaniel won the Kentucky State Amateur championship by six strokes, beating out Patrick Newcomb who finished in second. There were several golfers in this year's event from the coverage area; Pikeville's Will Branham finished one over par; David Snyder of Somerset shot a four-over 220; and Matt Gann of Pineville finished tied for 31st with a seven over par. This year's state amateur championship was held at the Bowling Green Country Club in Bowling Green.
