McDaniel defeats Mahle in a Six-Hole Playoff

Lexington, Ky. – The final round of the PGA Junior Series sponsored by Genesis Networks at Kearney Hill Golf Links provided exciting lead changes and strong finishes down the stretch on Thursday.

Daniel Wetterich of Cincinnati, Ohio passed Matthew Brittain of Abingdon, Va., on the back nine to claim the boys’ 13-15 division title.

Brittain, who owned a four-stroke lead with eight holes left to play, struggled on the final nine holes, while Wetterich wasted no time, firing off three birdies within the first five holes. He double bogeyed the eighth, but carded ten pars in a row, for a final-round one-under-par 71.

“I had a little hiccup on the eighth hole,” said Wetterich. “I didn’t worry and just forgot about it,” said Wetterich.

Wetterich carded a 54-hole-total of 217 to win by three-strokes.

Brittain’s back nine included three double bogeys and a bogey and forced him out of the lead and into second place overall.

First-round leader, Jacob Cook of Frankfort, Ky. had three birdies on the back nine to shoot a final-round 73 and finish in a tie for third with Michael Sass of Louisville, Ky.

Mika Liu of Bradenton, Fl., started the final round with a one-shot lead but carded three birdies on the back nine to cruise to victory by four strokes and win the overall girls’ division and girls’ 13-15 division.

She carded a 1-under-par 71 in the final round for a 54-hole-total of 217.

Liu’s win gains her an exemption into the 37th Junior PGA Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind., Aug 2-5, and the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, Calif.

Nadine Innes of Union, Ky., finished in second overall and Anna Hack of Paducah, Ky., finished alone in third.

Jordan Lippetz of Bradenton, Fla., edged Hanna Pietila of Brighton, Mich., carding a final-round 74 to claim the girls’ 16-18 division title

Kuriko Tsukiyama of West New York, N.J., finished third. Tsukiyama fired a final-round 75.

“Overall, I feel strong about my whole game.” said Lippetz.

Pietila, duplicated her second round score of 72 to vault up the leaderboard.

In the boys’ 16-18 division, Tyler McDaniel of Manchester, Ky. and Matthew Mahle of Lexington, Ky. faced off in a six-hole playoff.
McDaniel prevailed in the end to claim the title after Mahle three-putted for bogey. Both players were playing well up until the final hole and were both three-under-par in the playoff.

“I was wondering when it was going to end,” said McDaniel “I was hoping that I didn’t have to make knee-knocker putts to tie but I still had them and made them.”

His final-round 71 gave him a three-day-total of 215.

Fred Allen Myer of Nicholasville, Ky. had five birdies to shoot the low round of the day with a 69. He finished third overall.
