HARROGATE, TN -- The Railsplitters were selected third in the 2012 South Atlantic Conference men's tennis preseason poll on Tuesday morning. The conference's head coaches votes are compiled to determine these results.
Lincoln Memorial University finished with 79 total points which placed a distant third behind Wingate University and Anderson University. Wingate gained the slight edge with 94 total points and five first-place votes which gave the Bulldogs the top spot in the poll.
Railsplitters Philipp Hoffmann and Tom Goossens were each selected to preseason All-Conference teams. Hoffmann was selected to the preseason All-SAC First Team. A season ago, Hoffmann finished a dominant 9-0 in South Atlantic Conference and 18-1 overall. He ended the season on a 13-match winning streak, all while playing in the number one spot for the Railsplitters throughout the entire season. Goosens, a preseason All-SAC Second Team selection, was 13-4 during the 2011 campaign. He was especially strong in the SAC as he notched a 7-1 record in the conference.
The men's tennis team will be returning their top five from last season, when they finished 13-6 overall and 7-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The Railsplitters will look to capture their magic from the 2010 season which led to conference regular season and tournament championships. The 2012 season is set to begin on February 15th as LMU hosts the University of the Cumberlands. Matches are set for 2 p.m.
