MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. -- Milligan’s (Tenn.) Tyler DeVault scored a game-high 24 points, as the Buffaloes pulled away down the stretch to notch an 84-72 victory over the Union College men’s basketball team on Wednesday night in Appalachian Athletic Conference play at Lacy Fieldhouse.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 4-16 on the year, 1-5 in the AAC, while Milligan improved to 5-9, 3-3 in the AAC with the victory.
In the first period, Union raced out the locker room to take a 5-0 lead at the start after Ian Davis (Cherry Hill, N.J.) drained a three two minutes in. Milligan, however, quickly tied the game up at eight a few minutes later. For the majority of the period, the game was a nip and tuck affair, as the contest was tied at eight different junctures throughout the period.
With 3:04 left in the half, Carlos Sanford (Durham, N.C.) sunk a free throw to tie it up at 33-all, which marked the last time the game would be knotted up the rest of the way. It was here that the Buffaloes went on a 9-4 run to end the period to take a 42-37 lead at intermission.
To start the second half, Milligan picked up right where they left off in the first half, going on a back-breaking 16-5 run in the first five and half minutes of the period to take their biggest lead of the night at 58-42 with 14:42 left.
The deficit was too much for the Bulldogs to come back from, as the closest UC came the rest of the way to the lead was seven points (76-69) with 2:49 left. Milligan proceeded to coast down the stretch to record a conference win, and snap a six-game losing streak.
Overall, Union was led in the defeat by Ryan Young (Waynesburg, Ky.), who had 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. He also dished out four assists. The other double-digit scorers for the Bulldogs were Sanford and Stefan Juzbasic (Belgrade, Serbia), who each had 12 points, apiece.
DeVault led four Milligan double-digit scorers with his 24-point performance, which he accomplished on 10-of-12 shooting from the floor.
Union is now idle until Wednesday, Jan. 18 when they host Point at Robsion Arena in an AAC matchup. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
