Morehead travels to Illinois St. on Saturday

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State’s football team will look to continue its season-opening firepower on Saturday night when the Eagles travel to face the Illinois State Redbirds at Hancock Stadium at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Fans can catch the broadcast of the game on the Eagle Sports Network with WIVY-FM 96.3 serving once again as the flagship station. The game will also be available on www.msueagles.com

The Eagles are coming off one of the most lopsided wins in school history as they defeated visiting Kentucky Christian 67-0 on Sept. 1 in the season opener. MSU set numerous school and Pioneer Football League records, including rolling up 753 yards in total offense to establish the MSU and PFL single-game records. MSU’s 474 passing yards, including 385 yards from junior signal caller Zach Lewis, also set the MSU and PFL single game records.

On special teams, it was a special night for junior kicker Rainer Duzan, who was named the PFL Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday. He made all four of his field goals to tie the MSU single game record, and his career-long 48-yarder in the second quarter, gave him a school career record 20 field goals. He went on to add two more FGs and kicked seven extra points to set the MSU and PFL standard for points kicking in a game.

The Eagle defense, led by PFL Player of the Week Jerome Raymond, limited KCU into just 40 yards of offense. Raymond had 2.5 tackles for loss, both sacks, to push his streak of consecutive games with a TFL to 13.

Morehead State will be facing a Redbird team that absorbed a season-opening loss at Eastern Illinois, 36-26. In that game, quarterback Matt Brown threw for 243 yards on 23-of-35 totals. Ashton Leggett rushed for a team high 97 yards and scored two touchdowns. Three ISU defenders, led by Josh Howe’s 11, had double digit tackles. Shelby Harris had 1.5 tackles for loss and forced an EIU safety.

The Eagles and Redbirds are not familiar opponents. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 1972 to find the last meeting between the schools on the gridiron. The teams have only ever played twice, in 1971 and 1972, with MSU winning at ISU in 1971 and ISU returning the favor with a shutout at Jayne Stadium in Morehead in 1972.

Following Saturday’s game, MSU will return to Morehead to prepare for another road contest next weekend. The Eagles will travel to Loretto, Pa., to face longtime non-conference rival St. Francis. Kickoff on Sept. 17 is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.
