Wise, Virginia - UVa-Wise avenged an early season loss to Alice Lloyd on Tuesday as Kristin Mullins scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the host Cavaliers to a 77-55 non-conference victory.
Visiting Alice Lloyd had a hard time finding the bottom of the basket inside the Convocation Center by connecting on just 26 percent of its attempted field goals; meanwhile, UVa-Wise hit nearly 47 percent of its shot attempts to avenge a 56-51 loss in Pippa Passes on December, 6th.
UVa-Wise assumed its first lead of the game at the 16:23 mark of the first half when Amber Carter turned a steal into a layup giving the Cavs a 6-5 lead. Carter’s layup was the start of a 13-3 UVa-Wise run that saw Mullins, Chelsea Cluesman, Charlotte Reasor, and Ayla Young score.
Alice Lloyd would see the game continue to slip away over the remainder of the opening half; Mullins secured an offensive rebound and scored seconds before the first half horn to give UVa-Wise a 34-21 halftime lead. The bucket by Mullins capped a first half that saw the senior score 11 of her team high 18 points, the Clintwood, Virginia native also grabbed five rebounds in the opening half. The first half defensive performance was one of the strongest of the season for the Cavs as the Eagles made just six first half buckets on 34 attempts to shoot 17.6 percent from the floor.
Alice Lloyd improved to nine made buckets in the final period but were unable to reduce the lead to single digits. Cluesman enjoyed a strong second half by scoring 11 points and grabbing eight rebounds to finish with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the win. The double-double was the 11 of the season for the Jonseville, Virginia native, the 11 double-doubles leads the Mid-South Conference. Senior Amber Carter also scored in double figures for UVa-Wise by finishing with 10 points; Carter also posted seven assists, four steals, and three rebounds.
Alice Lloyd’s Ariel Nickel led all scorers with 22 points on six of 23 shooting while Carla McDaniel scored 12 points off the bench for the Eagles. The victory improves UVa-Wise to 4-14 on the season while Alice Lloyd drops to 5-16. The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday as they return to Mid-South action for a 2:00 p.m. tip against the University of Pikeville inside the Convocation Center.
