Wise, Virginia - UVa-Wise started the game on a 13-0 run and never looked back en route to an 83-47 victory in the opening round of the 2012 Mid-South Conference Tournament.
The victorious Cavaliers started the game on fire by hitting over 56 percent of their shots in the opening half while limiting the Bears to just 12.8 percent shooting in the opening stanza. UVa-Wise’s shooting advantage aided the Cavaliers to a 47-18 halftime lead.
UVa-Wise senior Kristin Mullins had one of her stronger games in the final home game of her collegiate career. The Clintwood, Virginia native scored 23 of her game high 31 points in the opening half. Mullins also grabbed 18 rebounds in the game to record her third double-double of the season. Christine Nyobe also finished with a double-double for UVa-Wise; the Cameroon, Africa product scored 11 points and collected 12 rebounds in just 17 minutes of work.
Chelsea Cluesman was the lone other Cav to post double figure scoring as she finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Senior point guard Amber Carter also had a productive day as she finished with nine points and eight assists in the win.
Pikeville was led by Kayla Smith who scored a team-high 12 points off the bench on 4-9 shooting. As a team, the Bears struggled hitting just 16 of 74 field goal attempts to finish the game with a 21.6 percent shooting percentage. The loss ends the season for Pikeville who finishes with a 4-27 record.
The victory sends UVa-Wise to the quarterfinal round of the Mid-South Tournament; the Cavs will play next on Thursday when the team plays #1 seed Cumberlands at 2:00 p.m. inside the Frankfort Convention Center. All the play by play action of the contest can be heard on www.uvawisecavs.com
