MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Nikki Davis, who won two high school state championships and played four years of Division I women's basketball, has been named an assistant coach at Morehead State.
Davis, who became the first player in Kentucky history to play in four consecutive state championship games, recorded 1,263 points, 802 assists and 530 steals at Lexington Catholic High School from 2003-06.Â She led the Knights to a 71-2 record (.973) and back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006.
"We are very excited to add Nikki to our coaching staff," Morehead State Head Coach Tom Hodges said.Â "Nikki is a young lady whom I recruited when she was at Lexington Catholic and someone I have always admired from afar for her abilities on the court and the way she carries herself."
Lexington Catholic was ranked sixth in the final USA Today Super 25 poll Davis' junior year and third her senior campaign.Â She was also a First-Team All-State selection her final prep season.
"I am excited and thankful to have the opportunity to be a part of the Morehead State women's basketball program," Davis said.Â "It has been a dream of mine to coach at the highest level, and I'm really excited about this next chapter of my basketball career."
Davis averaged 5.1 points while playing in all 30 games at Alabama in 2006-07.Â She tied the Crimson Tide freshman record with 11 assists in a game that season.
Davis then played three seasons at Virginia Tech, after sitting out the 2007-08 campaign as a Division I transfer.Â She averaged 7.5 points as a sophomore, 6.4 points as a junior and 6.4 points as a senior while seeing action in 80 career games for the Hokies.
She led Virginia Tech in assists as a junior and senior, while ranking first in steals her final season.Â Davis also earned the athletic department's strength & conditioning award in 2009 and 2011.
"Nikki's experiences at the highest level of college basketball will be a great asset and resource for our entire program," Hodges said.Â "When the opening occurred, Nikki was the first person to contact me and was very sincere in her approach while showing a great amount of passion for starting her coaching career at Morehead State.Â I think we have just added a rising star who has the skill set, charisma and personality to help move our program to the next level."
Davis has served as a girls basketball camp counselor at Alabama, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Kentucky and Transylvania over the past six years.
"Coach Hodges and his staff are fun, energetic and have the experience necessary to be successful nationally," Davis added.Â "I am going to bring my experience to the Eagles' program, but I also look forward to learning from the coaches who are already here.Â It's going to be a fun year."
Davis joins Hodges, Assistant Coach Eric White and Assistant Coach Lacey Goldwire on the 2012-13 Morehead State women's basketball coaching staff.Â The Eagles will begin their upcoming season in November.Â Check MSUEagles.com this fall for the team's game schedule.
