BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Freshman Haley Perkins (Glasglow, Ky.) scored a season-high 21 points, leading the 18th-ranked Union College women’s basketball team to a convincing 84-61 win over Cincinnati-Clermont on Saturday at Robsion Arena.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs moved to 8-2 on the year, extending their winning streak to five games in the process. UC-Clermont fell to 7-8 with the defeat.
In the first half, it took little time for Union to get a big lead, as they raced out to a quick 16-6 lead five minutes into the contest after Perkins knocked down a three. The Lady Bulldogs continued to put the pressure on to UC-Clermont throughout the period, eventually opening up a 22-point lead (33-11) with eight minutes left in the half.
From there, Union continued to roll, extending the lead out to a game-high 27-points (45-18) with three minutes left, and coasted into the halftime break with a large 47-24 lead over the visiting Cougars.
In the second half, it was more of the same, as Union stretched the lead out to 30 points (54-24) two minutes into the half, never looking back over the next 18 minutes. The closest UC-Clermont came to the Lady Bulldog lead the rest of the game was at 22 points (83-61) in the game's final minute, as Union coasted to a big 23-point home victory.
Overall, Perkins got to her 21 point total due to some hot shooting, as the guard sunk 8-of-9 shots from the field and went a perfect 5-for-5 from outside the arc. Perkins also notched the first double-double of her UC career in the victory, as well, as she snatched 10 rebounds.
Union’s only other double-digit scorer on the night was senior Lindsey Waters (Stearns, Ky.), who just missed out on another double-double, finishing with 19 points and nine rebounds.
UC-Clermont was led in the loss by three players who all scored 11 points, apiece - Marissa Stutz, Katie Slavey, and Stacie Lee.
The Lady Bulldogs will now go on break for the Christmas Holiday, and will return to action on Dec. 28, hosting the 2012 Union College Holiday Classic at Robsion Arena. On the 28th, UC will take on Tennessee Temple, with tipoff set for 8 p.m.
