No. 18 Union falls 79-63 to Milligan in AAC action

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The 18th-ranked Union women's basketball team suffered another setback Thursday as visiting Milligan (Tenn.) posted a 79-63 decision over the Lady Bulldogs in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

The conference loss is the second in a row for Union, dropping it to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the AAC. Meanwhile, Milligan now has a two-game lead in the conference standings as the Buffaloes are now 13-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

Union got off to a bad start and never really recovered. Tied at 7-all, Milligan went on a 14-4 run to open up a 21-11 lead with 12:02 left in the first half. Union cut the margin to 27-20 with 6:43 to go, but Milligan closed out the half on a 9-2 run to take a 40-25 lead into the break.

While both teams had 23 rebounds in the first half, Milligan had 10 offensive boards. Additionally, Union turned the ball over 15 times in the first half as compared to Milligan's four.

The Buffaloes kept up their solid play as the second half got underway, opening up a 63-43 cushion with 9:06 remaining. But Union showed some life and went on a 15-2 rally to pull within 65-58 at the 5:59 mark. But that was as close as the Lady Bulldogs could get as the Buffaloes regrouped and held on for the 79-63 decision.
Senior Lindsey Waters led Union with 17 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She also had four blocks on the game. Haley Perkins helped out with 15 points, while Amber Taylor had six points and nine assists.

For Milligan, Jaimee Hill led the way with 22 points with Johneshia Good following with 20. Kayla Kelly knocked in 14, while Chelsey Weddle had 10.

Both teams shot well from the floor with Union making 42.1 percent for the game and Milligan 41.8. The Buffaloes hit 8-of-20 from 3-point range, while the Lady Bulldogs went 4-for-13. Neither show particularly well from the foul line. Milligan went 15-for-25 on its free throws, and Union finished 11-for-20.

Union returns to action Saturday when it plays host to Columbia (S.C.) in conference play. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
