AUGUSTA, GA -- The 20th-ranked Lincoln Memorial University men's basketball team is primed and ready to head into Augusta, Georgia to battle the undefeated and 12th-ranked Jaguars of Augusta State University tomorrow evening. That game, coined as the "Jam the JBA" is set to tip off at 6 p.m. in the James Brown Arena in downtown Augusta.
In this contest, the top two teams in the Southeast Region over the past three seasons will be pitted in an early season battle with major regional and national ramifications at stake. The Railsplitters (7-1) come into this matchup with No. 12 Augusta State (5-0) as the winningest program in the Southeast Region over the past three season, as they have compiled an 80.2 winning percentage over that span. The Jaguars have recorded a winning percentage of 80 percent over that same stretch and have historically stood at the helm of the Southeast Region. The past five seasons have seen Augusta State make two appearances in the NCAA Division II Final Four (2008, 2009), an Elite Eight appearance (2010) and another run to the Sweet 16 in 2011.
The Railsplitters and Jaguars met for the first time on December 19th during the 2011-12 campaign with the 'Splitters coming away with a convincing 73-57 victory in Tex Turner Arena.
Both teams head into the game among the leaders throughout all of NCAA Division II in a variety of statistical categories. The Railsplitters rank 21st nationally in scoring offense (84.8), while ranking 10th in scoring margin (20.0). Lincoln Memorial boast one of the more efficient offenses in the country, ranking 15th in field-goal percentage (50%) and 10th in three-point field-goal percentage (43.3%). Defensively, LMU is 44th in field-goal percentage defense (39.3%) but have limited their foes to only 26.8% shooting from the three to sit in 13th nationally. The Railsplitters also rank 16th in the country in rebound margin, out-rebounding their opponents by an average of 9.4 per game.
The Jaguars rank as one of the most unselfish and least turnover prone teams in the nation, as they are fourth in the whole of Division II in assists per game (21.6) and eighth in assist to turnover ration (1.48). Augusta State is just ahead of the Railsplitters in three-point field-goal percentage, as they hold the ninth spot nationally in that category. They also rank 24th in scoring margin as they average a 14.6 point advantage over their foes.
