No. 9 Bears edge No. 11 Lindsey in overtime

COLUMBIA, Ky. – No. 9 Pikeville had three players with 20 or more points and knocked off No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 95-91 in overtime Saturday at the Biggers Sports Center.

Pikeville managed 95 points – 82 in regulation – against a Blue Raider team that was allowing only 43.5 points per game this season.

Senior Darren Ballou made only two three-point shots in the game for Lindsey. The first tied it late and the second – with 28 seconds left – put Lindsey on top 82-80. But the Bears got the ball into the hands of senior guard Jamar Deuce Briscoe, who drove to the basket for the game-tying layup with eight seconds left.

Lindsey (4-1, 1-1 in the Mid-South Conference) had an opportunity but couldn’t win the game, sending it to overtime.

Much line Thursday when they had a six-point possession at Campbellsville, the Bears took an early lead in the extra frame. A three by junior Darnell Tubbs with 3:52 to play put the Bears on top 87-83, but Lindsey would answer. Seniors Kalen Kimberland and Wesley Hanspard scored to tie it, and then two free throws by DeAntra Scott with 1:34 to play put the Raiders on top 89-87.

Pikeville (8-1, 1-1) too would answer, as Tubbs tied it off a pass from senior Trevor Setty and then put his team ahead to stay with two free throws with 23 seconds to play.

A steal by Chris Johnson put him at the line with 11 seconds left to push the Bears on top 93-89. Ballou closed it to two with a putback before Briscoe iced it with a pair of tosses with 1.7 seconds to play.

Pikeville finished the game at 54.7 percent overall and went 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the arc in the win. The Bears went 19-of-27 from the line, good for 70.4 percent.

Lindsey Wilson shot 41.6 percent overall and 36.8 percent from the arc. The Blue Raiders were 20-of-29 (69.0 percent) from the line.

Lindsey Wilson won the rebounding battle 45-39, getting 22 rebounds off the offensive glass. Scott had a double-double with 10 boards. Hanspard added eight and Ballou seven.

The Bears got 10 rebounds from Tubbs to lead the way. Setty and junior forward Brandon Greene had eight each; Greene added five blocked shots.

Lindsey Wilson will travel to Campbellsville on Tuesday night for an 8 p.m. EST. Pikeville will host U.Va.-Wise Tuesday night at the East Kentucky Expo Center. The game is set for an 8 p.m. opening tip.
