WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Senior third basemen Joe Engle tied the school record for hits in a game with five while driving in six runs as No. 12 Union to a 15-1 victory over host Cumberlands (Ky.) on Wednesday.
Engle (Sidney, Ohio) is the 11th player in program history to collect five hits in a game. In addition to the six RBIs, he scored twice, lined two doubles and homered.
With the win, Union is 2-0 on the season. Cumberlands falls to 2-2 overall.
The Bulldogs scored in seven of the nine innings, building an 11-0 lead after five and a half innings before the Patriots scored in the bottom of the sixth. Union tacked on a run in the seventh and three more in the ninth, making the final 15-1.
Clay Ragland (Chillicothe, Ohio) put together a solid game, going 4-for-6 with four runs, three RBIs, two doubles and a stolen base. Brandon Hedrick (Corbin, Ky.) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Cory Perreault (Phoenix, Ariz.) also drove in a pair of runs.
Lee Malone (Jacksonville, Fla.) was credited with the win, making him 1-0 on the season. He tossed two shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out one.
Union returns to action Friday when it hosts Iowa Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
