GEORGETOWN, Ky. – No. 12 Georgetown College took control late in the first half and rolls past No. 20 University of Pikeville 74-49 Thursday night.

Pikeville (14-8, 6-5 in the Mid-South Conference) could have drawn even with the Tigers and tied for second place in the league standings, but a 7-0 run down the stretch of the first half led the home team to the win.

A basket from the baseline by junior Trevor Setty with 6:48 remaining pulled the Bears within one at 16-15, but the 2:13 run led to the demise of the Bears. Senior Johonne Hamilton started it with a free throw, and his basket with 4:54 left made it 23-15.

After junior Kenny Rhymes stopped the bleeding, the Tigers outscored the Bears 9-2, as the guests made only a pair of free throws in four tries for a four-minute stretch. Hamilton’s layup with 49 seconds left made it 32-19 before a basket by senior Andrew Young pulled the Bears within 11 at the break.

The teams played evenly in the first five minutes of the second half, with Georgetown leading 42-30 before an 8-0 run led to a 17-5 stretch to put the game on ice. It opened with four from senior Jordan DeMercy and ended with six in a row by junior Allen Thomas, with the final points coming with 9:08 left to make it 59-35.

Georgetown (18-5) took the lead in the MSC standings with an 8-3 mark, moving a half-game in front of idle Lindsey Wilson. The Tigers shot 50.8 percent from the floor to help them overcome 1-of-10 shooting from the arc.

Pikeville, meanwhile, was a miserable 26.3 percent overall and 20 percent from the three-point stripe.

Junior Garel Craig led four Tigers in double figures with 17 points. He was joined by Thomas with 14, senior Jordan DeMercy with 13 and Morris with 11.

The Bears got 19 from Setty, who moved from 24th to 22nd on the all-time scoring list with 19 markers, giving him 11,01 to this point in his career. Senior Shane Burrell followed with 13 points. His eight rebounds led the Bears to a 43-41 edge on the glass, with 18 of them coming off the offensive glass.

Pikeville will remain on the road Saturday, visiting Shawnee State in a 4 p.m. start. Georgetown stays home Saturday with U.Va.-Wise paying a visit at 4 p.m.
